Optimism grows in Portugal

Portuguese Minister for the Economy addresses Portuguese British ChamberThe Portuguese Minister for the Economy, Manuel Caldeira Cabral, delivered an upbeat speech to the British Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (BPCC) at the Corporate Members' Lunch. Hosted by HM Ambassador to Portugal, Kirsty Isobel Hayes, the event was held in May, marking the chamber's 100th anniversary year.

After years of economic strife, Mr Caldeira Cabral, said that the Portugues economy is finally showing signs of growth and stability, and that pessimism was dwindling while optimism is growing. The former university professor has ties with Britain, having studied for his PhD in Economics at the University of Nottingham.

The audience was comprised of the BPCC's Corporate and Executive Class members and the event was sponsored by EY. Guests took the opportunity to field searching questions, to which the Minister gave frank and clear asnwers without dodging contentious issues such as the state of the civil service.

The BPCC was pleased to once again provide members with access to one of the most senior, influential and well respected members of the Portuguese government. The genuine nature of the interaction and the charm and approachability of the minister's personality left all impressed.
